Cannons Of Ethics

«A human being is judged in his interactions with
other human beings. The fact that one may excel
in one or more fields of personal endeavor is less
important than his behavior and humanity as these
are observed in his daily life.»
Peter Georgiou, 1998
  1. Courtesy
All human beings are entitled to equal courtesy. This is equally applicable in the dojo as well as outside. All human beings have the right to live their lives according to their philosophy and no one has the right to impose upon anyone else his view. This despite the deep conviction that one may hold to his view. All, however, are entitled to argue in defense of their view.

  2. Karate ni sente nashi There is no first attack in karate
This is an inviolate rule. There can be no exceptions. This fundamental rule is what distinguishes a karateka. A GoJu-Te student is never permitted to violate this sacred principle of karate. 1 No GoJu-Te student is allowed to initiate or instigate a confrontation inside or outside of the dojo.

  3. Respect (Minor Students)
No GoJu-Te student shall disrespect or encourage others to disrespect his/her parents, teachers, elders or others in general.

  4. Obligation
Honoring one's obligations is at the center of GoJu-Te philosophy. Recognizing and accepting one's obligations is a measurement of one's strength. No GoJu-Te student is allowed to forego his/her obligations in any field of endeavor.

  5. Truth
At the epicenter of GoJu-Te study is the principle of truth. Once proven truth in inviolate. No GoJu-Te student is allowed to stray from true principles.

  6. Good Scholastic Performance (School age Students)
No GoJu-Te student will be allowed to continue with his/her karate study at any GoJu-Te dojo unless he/she maintains acceptable levels of scholastic performance. Progress in scholastics is a measure of progress in GoJu-Te.

  7. Misbehavior
No GoJu-Te student will be allowed to continue with his/her karate study if he/she engages in misbehavior either in the dojo or in society; any student who is arrested and/or convicted for any crime is subject to immediate dismissal from the school and diminution of rank.

(1) This principle is inscribed on the monument of Gichin Funakoshi (d. 1957) the founder of Shotokan karate, one of the fathers of Okinawan Karate, and is usually attributed to him. GoJu-Te embraces Master Funakoshi's principle.
