Conditioning Philosophy

In GoJu-Te we apply a combination of traditional and modern techniques and approaches for optimal physical conditioning and performance. Physical conditioning is a condition precedent to combat. Without conditioning the body does not possess the requisite physical endurance or strength to undertake the rigorous physical requirements of hand to hand combat. Besides combat, which may occur once or twice during an artist's lifetime, conditioning has two other important benefits: (1) it generally tends to improve overall health and appearance, and (2) improves personal confidence. For these reasons physical training is a very important part of GoJu-Te.

The central rule to our conditioning approach is the application of "single target" uncomplicated exercises and techniques.

GoJu-Te's approach is generally divided into two major categories:

  1. General Conditioning
Encompassing overall physical (or athletic) conditioning, and
  2. Special Conditioning
Encompassing physical conditioning necessary for combat.

To achieve these two primary objectives GoJu-Te applies four basic principles to physical training:

  1. Specificity,
  2. The "Load/Unload" Training Cycle,
  3. The "Hard, Easy & Off" Approach, and
  4. Guarding against the "Over-Training" Syndrome.
