Karate is not for sale in the Goju Te Ryu School.
Karate is taught as a matter of privilege only to those who are willing
to embrace its spirit of humanity and the principle of self-development.
Not since
Chojun Miyagi's
(1888 - 1953) time has there been a school of self-defense that has
undertaken to teach karate
without a fee. Master
Miyagi
believed that karate ought to be taught only to students that would
embrace karate's most fundamental principles as a way of life and not
to those that simply could afford to pay for lessons. These fundamental
principles include peace, truth and the desire for self-improvement.
The ability to pay does not assure that the student will be able to
understand and accept these principles.
Professor Georgiou believes that the payment of a fee greatly detracts
from the teaching as well as the learning of karate. This because
the monetary fee interferes with the relationship between teacher
and student by creating an artificial contractual barrier wherein
the teacher is seen as a mere service provider while the student as
a mere consumer. In Professor Georgiou's view karate cannot be learned
under "market" conditions. Karate can only be
learned when the teacher has a genuine desire to pass on his knowledge
while the student develops a genuine desire to learn.
It is in this spirit that we ask for your support.
After much personal sacrifice and hard work Professor Georgiou has opened
the GJT Center for Development and has made karate accessible to all
in our community. Now each of us has to do his and her part
in maintaining our school.
We ask that you contribute as much as you can whenever you can to
help our school survive and grow.
Together we can do it.
